IMPLICATION OF MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM REFORM IN NIGERIA SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

Reforms are very important in any society that intends to change, we are aware that Mathematics is a driving force of change especially in technology, so it becomes necessary for Mathematics to constantly undergo reforms that will meet the yearnings of the people who equally require changes at any point in time. This paper therefore took a cursory look at reforms in Mathematics curriculum of the Nigeria Secondary Schools. It traced the history of Nigeria Secondary School Mathematics curriculum from the pre-colonial to the most recent one as published by the Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC). Various segments of the curriculum were critically analyzed to ascertain their relevance as they affect the desire of the people. The paper concludes and suggests that Federal and States Ministries of Education should embark on massive training cum retraining of Mathematics teacher to teach the subject in secondary schools; there should be a review of Mathematics programmes in our institutions of learning, provision of infrastructural aids amongst others.
