BUSINESS EDUCATION AS A STRATEGY FOR JOB CREATION, YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

One major challenge facing Nigeria today is the problem of unemployment and its associated consequences such as poverty, idleness, continuous increase in crime rate. Nigerian government is concerned with how to create jobs for the several thousands of youths graduating from various educational institutions in the country. Business Education stand to equip school leavers and graduates of tertiary institutions with appropriate knowledge and skills to enable them establish their own businesses and become self-employed instead of rooming about the streets in search of unavailable white cola job. Business Education, a sub-set of Vocational Technical Education (VTE) as an effective functional and qualitative education programmes, is capable of rescuing the nation out the current challenges of poverty, unemployment and its adverse effects on the people. If properly implemented, it can provide youths with the needed skills to help them become job creators. This can be done through setting up business centres, operating of on-line business activities, small scale business, etc. and not too long get expanded to offer employment to other youths. This contributes to job creation, youth empowerment and sustainable development in Nigeria.
